Institutional Biosafety Committee
Purpose
Baylor University Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is charged with reviewing research and teaching activities that may involve the use of potentially hazardous biological materials to provide guidance and support to execute activities safely and responsibly. The IBC reviews the use of infectious agents, human body fluids or tissues, and recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules in any application with plants, animals, insects, and/or cell culture.
Responsibilities
To ensure safe and responsible conduct of research involving biological hazards the IBC reviews, approves, and maintains a record of all research and teaching activities by faculty, staff and students, that may utilize biohazardous materials and/or recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid molecules.
Composition
The IBC is made up of faculty, staff, and community members with diverse knowledge and expertise representing numerous University departments. Additionally, the Biosafety Officer, Environmental Health & Safety, Research Compliance, Facilities and Vivarium representatives all hold permanent appointments to this committee. New members are nominated by the IBC Chair and appointed by the Vice Provost of Research and IBC members serve a three-year term.
